Agaete, the charming white village of Gran Canaria is located in the northwestern part of the island right on the coast. Agaete’s high cliffs and relaxed fishing village atmosphere as well as dark sandy beaches enchant and entice you to visit and spend the day enjoying the sun and the smell of the sea.

Agaete’s whitewashed houses with blue window frames and fisherman’s style decorations are an attraction itself already. However, there is more to Agaete. Here in this green valley you can also admire handsome cacti and other wonderful plants, as well as big pine trees. Oranges, wines and coffee grow in the valley.

PUERTO DE LAS NIEVES

Agaete’s port Puerto de las Nieves is a lively fishing harbor area with excellent restaurants at affordable prices. There is also a ferry from the port of Puerto de las Nieves to Santa Cruz, the capital of the neighboring island of Tenerife.

We traveled to Agaete on one of our sunny days off on the local bus number 103 from the center of Las Palmas. The trip cost only less than five euros per person each way. Local buses, or guaguas, are an excellent way to travel around the island and get to know different places without your own rental car, and the connections work well. Another option is to take a convenient guided island tour, during which you can see all the best parts of the island a local guide.

We enjoyed the peaceful and relaxed atmosphere of Agaete, and admired the white buildings of the village along the valley. An old acquaintance of my husband lives in Agaete, so he showed us places and offered us a delicious lunch at his friend’s local restaurant, the name of which unfortunately I no longer remember.

Finally, we went to freshen up at the Las Salinas natural pools. This is definitely a place worth experiencing in Agaete, and it doesn’t even cost anything. The natural pools are a popular swimming spot and there are railings and stairs, so it’s easy to walk around the pools without any problems. The destination is suitable for all age groups and is just a short walk from the port of Puerto de las Nieves along the coast.
