WHAT ISLA DE LOBOS?

Isla de Lobos, (island of wolves in English), is a small volcanic island 2 kilometers north of Fuerteventura. Wolves have never lived on the island, but the name comes from the seals that once lived on the island, which were called sea wolves. Isla de Lobos is only about 4.6 kilometers in area and the island is completely uninhabited. The highest point of Lobos is the caldera of a collapsed volcano, which rises to 127 meters. The charm of Lobos is definitely its charming little beach coves, which can be found along the island’s walking route. The island is uninhabited, but on its shores you can still find a few hippies’ huts, where they sometimes spend time fishing. The island’s only lighthouse was automated in the 1960s, when the last inhabitants left the island.

Lobos has been a nature reserve since 1982 and day trips to the island are made from the northern tip of Fuerteventura, the town of Corralejo. The journey by boat and catamaran takes only about 20 minutes from the port of Corralejo. You should book the trip in advance so that you can be sure you get to go on the day you want.

HIKING AND BEAUTIFUL LAGOONS

Lobos island is dry and rocky and there are well-marked hiking trails around the island. It is also possible to hike to the top of the caldera, but we couldn’t do it anymore in addition to the hot sunshine and the long walking route. We had also eaten all our food and there wasn’t much water left either, so we decided to head to one of the island’s beautiful sand dune beaches to relax for the rest of the day.

If you go on a day trip to Lobos, prepare plenty of snacks and your own drinks. There are no shops or restaurants on the island, only a small cafe where you can refuel, if the cafe still has something to offer. So don’t rely on this.
